Lionsgate's trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping takes the series back to District 12, a generation before Katniss. The film opens in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.
The story
Based on Suzanne Collins's 2025 novel, it follows a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) when he's chosen for the 50th Hunger Games. It's a Quarter Quell, so every district sends twice the usual number of tributes. The film is set 24 years before the original Hunger Games and follows The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes in the timeline.
Who's in it
Zada leads a big ensemble: Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, Maya Hawke as Wiress and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee. Jesse Plemons plays Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning is a young Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin takes over as Caesar Flickerman, Glenn Close plays Drusilla Sickle, and Ralph Fiennes is President Snow.
Behind the camera
Francis Lawrence directs his fifth film in the series, from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie.
