The Lost Boys (1987)

This 80’s cult classic really sets the mood for some fun horror with the creaking sound of leather pants, dark shades, cigarette smoke and boardwalk hooligans. And who doesn’t love a good angsty-teen vampire movie!? I’d be lying if I said watching this movie didn’t make me want to buy a leather jacket or a flowy skirt and hang around a pier at midnight.

One of the things that stood out to me the most was the humor in this film and how authentically 80’s it felt. It really shines through its family and friendship dynamics. We are instantly transported into the setting through the two brothers, Michael and Sam. Falling effortlessly into the feeling of wanting to “be cool man” and being drawn to what the local mysterious and mystical gang has to offer. Then, of course the thin but sweet love story between Michael and Star gives the audience a romance to root for throughout the film.

The practical horror effects in this film are also so beautifully gory and typical of the time period. I have to say, I loved it. With modern day CGI we don’t often see practical effects like this pulled off in horror anymore. At times, I find it’s a shame because of course it looks rough and it is definitely a stylistic choice but it adds a layer of magic that can’t be recreated digitally.

As far as horror movies go, this film is definitely on the tamer side being a horror comedy and does not focus solely on how terrifying it can make its kills. It is also not groundbreaking in its storytelling. But nonetheless, it is an incredibly fun and thrilling ride. It will be a joy to revisit time and time again, if only just to get the exciting rush of being back in Santa Carla with… all the damn vampires!
